Orthodontics

A Healthy and Proper Smile

If you have an improper bite or misaligned teeth, orthodontics offers treatments that can help. At Čolić Dental Clinic, we provide comprehensive orthodontic therapy, enabling you to chew food more easily while your teeth become straighter, more beautiful, and natural-looking.

What is Orthodontics and What Does It Solve?

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry focused on correcting the misalignment of teeth and jaws. Its goal is not only to address aesthetic concerns but also to alleviate painful conditions and chewing system disorders. Today, orthodontic therapy is accessible to everyone—not a luxury but a necessity that should not be overlooked.

Orthodontic treatment is typically performed during adolescence but is possible at any age. If you are concerned about the appearance of your teeth and smile, wearing metal devices on your teeth might not seem appealing. However, it is crucial to follow the recommendations of orthodontic specialists to achieve lasting results, despite the temporary aesthetic inconvenience.

Advances in orthodontics have led to modern braces and dental aligners that meet high aesthetic standards and are almost invisible to wear.

The choice of brackets depends on the type of anomaly. Most patients share the same desires—minimally visible braces and faster treatment. That’s why we always strive to recommend the best orthodontic solution for everyone.

Who Needs Orthodontic Therapy?

Most orthodontic patients are teenagers with crooked or misaligned teeth. However, orthodontics is also for anyone dissatisfied with their dental aesthetics or concerned about the impact on their oral health. Candidates for fixed orthodontic therapy are individuals over the age of 13, while those under 13 can benefit from mobile orthodontic solutions.

Types of Orthodontic Therapies and Devices

Fixed braces are the primary therapeutic tools in orthodontics, consisting of brackets and wires connecting the brackets. This solution is commonly referred to as “fixed braces,” although other types of fixed prosthetic solutions exist in dentistry.

Brackets are elements attached to the teeth, featuring grooves designed to hold the wire. The wire generates orthodontic force through its elastic properties, causing tooth movement. The strength of the force depends on the wire’s material, thickness, and shape, while the direction of force is determined by the brackets’ design. Usually, brackets and wires are placed on the outer surfaces of the teeth, with “white” brackets offering minimal visibility and enhanced aesthetics.

Older-generation brackets were made of metal, but modern options include ceramic, composite “white,” sapphire, or metal-ceramic combinations. These are tailored to match tooth color and are used for patients with high aesthetic demands.

Mobile braces, often referred to as “removable braces,” were once the main therapeutic tools in orthodontics. Today, they are primarily used for retention or in mixed dentition (ages 8-9).

Mobile braces consist of an acrylic base and wires bent into various shapes. The acrylic base resembles that of a removable denture, with wires extending to secure around the teeth. These wires are integrated with the base, which often includes a screw mechanism allowing it to expand and generate orthodontic force.

Different base and screw designs achieve specific effects on the teeth. Mobile braces can be easily removed and reinserted, functioning effectively while worn.

Retention is a crucial procedure aimed at preserving the results of orthodontic therapy. Retainers hold the teeth in the desired position achieved through orthodontic treatment. There are fixed and mobile retainers, which are typically used after almost every orthodontic treatment.

  • Fixed Retainers: Made of wire and bonded to the teeth with adhesive, these remain permanently in the mouth.
  • Mobile Retainers: Made from transparent plastic material, these can be removed and reinserted as needed.

Clear aligners are entirely transparent orthodontic devices without wires or brackets. Often referred to as “invisible aligners,” they consist of clear trays custom-made in our dental laboratory using precise impressions of your jaw with CAD/CAM technology.

This type of aligner is an excellent choice for straightening teeth in the upper, lower, or both jaws. They work discreetly, gently, and safely, quickly giving you straight teeth without interfering with chewing or causing discomfort when smiling.

Clear aligner therapy takes longer than conventional mobile braces (3-15 months), but its primary advantage is invisibility and discretion during wear.
